Integrating your Business

The history of information technology (IT) in the enterprise is the story of connecting things together: whether the story is connecting people, applications, systems or data. As years have passed, however, the number of connections between all aspects of the business and the infrastructure have increased; some would say -immeasurably. A key driver of the growth in connectivity has been the increase in the volume of information being generated and the corresponding and effective use of that information. It is this growth in information use and interconnectivity that has presented new challenges to enterprise leaders and more specifically to the integration capability within the organisation. If one were to look at just a subset of the enterprise IT infrastructure, one application at a time, things reflect a somewhat simple environment.

Figure 1: Growth in Integration Complexity
As it stands connecting one application to another nd exchanging data is not necessarily complex, when everything is functioning as it should. But when things go wrong, go wrong, go VERY wrong. In integration, the saying, all roads lead to Rome, unfortunately, is a message to which everyone not involved in integration seems to subscribe. The details for virtually every business today are huge in number and the variety of applications and systems, generating immense quantities of data, all most likely provide value to the business. However, how does all this data get tracked, transformed and reviewed without loss, risk or delay? And as time passes, these connections of any one application multiply. Business evolves, as business opportunities arise and disappear, as new business partnerships are created, and as customers become more inter-active and demanding. Your business thus faces increasing challenge in the face of global competition.

Enterprise Application Integration

The data flowing between you, your business systems and your customers can be a critical business asset. But inflexible application connectivity can make it difficult, if not impossible, to transform that data into actionable information in a way that supports the business. Unquestionably one of the greatest challenges facing enterprise architects today is responding more quickly to change. Suddenly a new business partner needs access to data in your ERP application. Or, to streamline payroll functions, Finance needs immediate access to data within Human Resources applications. Yet it is not uncommon for enterprises to have dozens of applications that communicate in haphazard ways. The applications and their connections are rigid, requiring hard-coded changes that are costly, timeconsuming and often error-prone. It is no surprise that the more you attempt to change the ways in which your applications communicate, the more complex the task of managing the messaging environment becomes. As you attempt to respond to business changes and requests in your current environment, you are forced to add point-to-point connectivity. The number of interfaces you need to define increases exponentially, as do your administrative tasks and resulting headaches. By enabling you to connect through an intermediary integration layer, IBM ESB eliminates the need for point-to-point connectivity, so you need manage only two connections rather than a multitude. The result is that it helps you untangle costly and debilitating IT complexity
